Drummer Max Weinberg headlines Syracuse Music Industry Conference
(Mark Bialczak/The Post-Standard) October 03, 2010
Max Weinberg relishes his relationship with Syracuse.
“I’ve spoken at Syracuse University several times,” says the New Jersey-born drummer who’s earned
his keep through four decades with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band and ratcheted-up his
pop culture celebrity as the leader of two NBC late night shows hosted by Conan O’Brien.
Weinberg credits two concerts with Springsteen on the SU campus with forever changing the scope of his universe.
“The Carrier Dome, late December ’84 or January ’85,” Weinberg recalls during a phone interview from Italy,
where he owns a home. “I remember a lot of snow.”

Music Industry Conference welcomes 1,000 to Oncenter in downtown Syracuse
(Mark Bialczak/The Post-Standard) October 08, 2010
Liz Nowak expects to see at least 1,000 people making connections, taking notes and appreciating live,
original music Friday and Saturday in downtown Syracuse.
“That’s good. We’re good,” says the chair of the committee that organizes the Syracuse New Times
Syracuse Area Music Awards and its new cousin, the Music Industry Conference dubbed MIC, which also
stands for meet, interact, connect. “I think the rule of thumb for any stuff like this is, 1,000 to
1,500 the first year is a success.”
After all, Nowak says, the giant of music industry conferences, South by Southwest — which drew 12,000
registrants to Austin, Texas, last year — points out on its website that it started with 700 attendees in 1987.

NEWS: MUSIC LOVERS MEET, INTERACT & CONNECT AT MIC
October 18, 2010
It’s a Friday afternoon, and the city of Syracuse has transformed into a mecca for music lovers. With
the inaugural Music Industry Conference (MIC) and the 17th annual Syracuse Area Music Awards (Sammys)
taking place the same weekend, the Syracuse music scene is on display.
MIC launched this year as a two-day networking event that brought together cutting-edge artists,
ground-breaking bands, and original music of all genres alongside today’s music industry leaders.
MIC was filled with panels and lectures about the music industry, as well as live performances at
a variety of venues throughout the city.
A large part of the conference focused on the aspiring music scene and featured such highly-acclaimed
panelists as Tommy Nast and Ellyn Solis, who shared stories and advice with up-and-coming musicians.
(Nast spent time on Syracuse’s airwaves in the 70s and 80s at 94-Rock and is currently the co-owner of
Rock Band Entertainment. Solis worked as Senior Director at Epic Records/500 Music/Sony Music and was
a publicist at Atlantic Records.)
